October and November 2024
We recently had an incredible hands-on attachment at Hospital Ipoh, welcoming back candidates from our August 2024 course! This encourages continuous learning, providing even more opportunities for ultrasound hands-on experience under trainers’ supervision.
Together, we delved into correlating ultrasound findings with clinical care, aiming to enhance and personalize critical care management. The training also featured additional demonstrations on ultrasound use to support day-to-day decisions in the ICU. This time round, we even expanded our outreach, with trainers flying to Hospital Umum Sarawak to offer the same intensive learning to our Borneo-based candidates!
A huge thank you to the ICU team at HUS for their amazing support in making this possible. Here’s to advancing critical care together!

2nd ACOUSTIC Course
After the successful conclusion of the inaugural ACOUSTIC course, feedback from participants was gathered and analyzed in a subsequent meeting. Based on this feedback, the syllabus was updated and enhanced to improve both content and delivery. Some topics were pre-recorded and transitioned to an offline format, while more complex subjects were divided into smaller, more manageable segments. Greater emphasis was also placed on valvular assessment and diastolic dysfunction. With these revisions in place, the second ACOUSTIC course was held from August 8th to 9th, 2024, at Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun in Ipoh, Perak Darul Ridzuan.
The course, led by Dr. Foong Kit Weng, the head of the ACOUSTIC program, welcomed 23 participants. He was supported by Dr. Lee Biing Horng (Physician, Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun), Dr. Calvin Wong Ke Wen (ICU Fellow, Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II), Dr. Ummar Qayyum Ahmad (ICU Fellow, Hospital Sultan Ismail), Dr. Minsyeh Kimin (Radiologist, Hospital Fatimah), and Puan Marsuheda Binti Ayub (Echocardiography Medical Assistant, Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun). The course also included four newly certified candidates from across Malaysia who were training to become supervisors and facilitators. The administrative aspects of the course were managed by Dr. Leong E Li (Medical Officer, Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun).
The two-day course was conducted successfully, featuring a mix of didactic lectures and hands-on sessions that covered the core content effectively. Based on participant feedback, the majority felt that the range and depth of the topics covered were appropriate, and they appreciated the expertise of the facilitators. Participants particularly valued the hands-on activities for reinforcing theoretical knowledge and praised the overall organization of the course. Participants were informed about the post-course logbook assessment and the exit examination. The formal attachment period was scheduled for October/November 2024, with the examination tentatively planned for February/March 2025, to coincide with the third ACOUSTIC course.
