Beyond BASIC
Primarily designed for intermediate to senior intensive care trainees, it is also an immensely popular refresher course among intensive care specialists.
After a lengthy hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Beyond Basic: Mechanical Ventilation course returned with a bang in 2023. Organised by the MSIC, with teaching material courtesy of the BASIC collaboration, Chinese University of Hong Kong, the course was held at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre.
Participants will learn about the practical aspects of mechanical ventilation through a series of lectures on the first day and interactive skills stations on the second day. Year 2023’s facilitators were a mix of familiar and new faces – Dr. Premela Naidu, Dr. Vineya Rai, Dr. Khoo Tien Meng and Dr. Lee See Pheng (the original cast of local BBMV facilitators) and the new kids on the block – Dr. Amelia Mohamed Ain, Dr. Aliza Mohamad Yusof and Dr. Yap Mei Hoon. Professor Dr. Gavin Joynt, one of the founders of the BASIC collaboration completed the lineup of facilitators.

The organising committee received an overwhelming response from applicants and those who missed out on the chance to join in 2023 will be pleased to know that this course looks set to be a yearly affair. Interested providers should watch this space for details on the upcoming BBMV 2024.
