Re-C-OVE-r Initiative, Hospital Sungai Buloh

Widely termed as Post-Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS), it refers to new or worsening impairments in physical, cognitive and/or mental health of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) survivors.

The Re-C-OVE-R Initiative workshop is represented by multidisciplinary speakers who intend to enlighten participants with theoretical knowledge and firsthand experience in delivering early rehabilitation interventions in the ICU.

But first, what is the Re-C-OVE-r Initiative?

It is a partnership between healthcare professionals from various disciplines, led by REHAB champions consisting of nurses, doctors (ICU and rehabilitation medicine consultants, specialists, medical officers, house officers), allied healthcare providers (physiotherapists, occupational therapists) and finally/most importantly, our ICU patients and their family.

It is a collaborative effort driven by a common goal, which is to improve the functional quality of life in critically ill ICU survivors by implementing early rehabilitative activities in the ICU.

Our ICU- Rehab Re-C-OVE-R team in Hospital Sungai Buloh are determined to change the narratives for ICU survivors by focusing beyond survival and beyond ICU towards their best functional recovery and outcomes.

With this in mind, we just concluded our ICU Early Rehabilitation Course- A Multi Disciplinary Approach Using the ‘Rehabilitation of Critically Overt towards Recovery (RE-C-OVE-R) Framework’  held on 31/7/2024 at Auditorium Hospital Sungai Buloh.

The event which was graced by Selangor State Health Director Dr Ummi Kalthum Binti Shamsudin and attended by 29 Consultants/Specialist, 50 Medical Officers, 105 Physiotherapist & Occupational Therapist, 53 nurses from KKM, universities and private healthcare services across all states in Malaysia.

We are grateful for the overwhelming response, support and inspiring presence of all colleagues attending the event. We hope that participants’ expectation for attending this event was fulfilled through our lecture series, interactive  sessions, video forum,  practical hands-on  stations and panel discussions.

We are looking forward to organizing  2.0 Re-C-OVE-R workshop in 2025 with inclusion of further updates on this initiative. We are also planning to launch the e-book Manual Step by Step Application of RE-C-OVE-R Framework for potential adaptation and application at other interested centres.
